AMA and Charity Care

Despite the declining number of primary care physicians (and not to mention the declining incomes and rising practice costs of the primary care docs that are left), the AMA announced yesterday that it has adopted policy making physicians ethically responsible for providing charity care to patients who are uninsured or unable to pay “so long as it is fiscally sustainable for physicians”. Although some physicians seem to be concerned regarding this new ethical obligation and the possible financial repercussions that go with it, it is definitely a step in the right direction to connect physicians with agencies that can help provide the comprehensive care low-income and uninsured patients need.
